Hurricane Jose still has 85 mph winds with gusts to 105 mph, but it will be steadily weakening over the next few days as it passes southeast of Long Island. Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for Long Island. Eastern Suffolk can expect 2 to 4 inches of rain tomorrow with wind gusts of 40 mph to 60 mph. The remainder of Suffolk can expect 1 to 3 inches of rain with wind gusts of 35 mph to 50 mph, and Nassau can expect 0.5 to 1 inch of rain with wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph. Jose will then continue to weaken and loop around and dissipate well southeast of Long Island, and this will have major implications on the future track of Hurricane Maria.
Hurricane Maria has continued to strengthen, and it now has sustained winds of 90 mph with gusts of 115 mph. It is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph with gusts as high as 160 mph as it crosses over or just near Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The eventual track will depend exactly where the remnants of Hurricane Jose are located. At this time, it appears that Hurricane Maria will eventually be drawn northward into the Atlantic far enough offshore to spare the east coast of the United States from a direct hit. However, this is a complicated pattern, and it has to be monitored.
