The Long Island forecast with some comments and images as winter begins today:

- The winter solstice is at 10:59 this morning.

- After the showers end tomorrow morning and the sun comes out in the afternoon, it will be windy with gusts up to 30 mph by late afternoon.

- Very cold tomorrow night as it will still be windy and temperatures will fall into the 20's.

- There is a very slight chance for some flurries or light snow showers for a couple of hours around 11 PM Thursday night to 1 AM on Christmas Eve (late Thursday night).

- The snow map for Christmas from the NWS model blend is shown in the 4th image.


LONG ISLAND FORECAST:

Today: Mostly sunny in the morning with filtered sunshine in the afternoon through mid to upper level clouds with highs in the mid 40's. Wind out of the W at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and then light and variable in the afternoon.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers after 11 PM with lows in the mid 30's in Nassau and low 30's in Suffolk in the evening and then rising towards midnight. Light and variable wind.

Tomorrow: Scattered showers in the morning, ending from west to east between around 9 AM and Noon with the sun quickly coming out an hour or so later and becoming windy with highs in the mid to almost upper 40's. Wind out of the N at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and out of the NW at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon with gusts up to 30 mph by late afternoon.

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear, windy, and cold with lows in the mid to upper 20's. Wind out of the WNW to NW at 15 to 20 mph with gusts close to 30 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny with highs close to 40 degrees. Wind out of the WNW at 10 to 15 mph.

Thursday night: Increasing clouds with a slight chance of flurries or light snow showers around or just after midnight. Lows mostly in the upper 20's. Light and variable wind.

Friday (Christmas Eve): Cloudy early in the morning and then mostly cloudy with some filtered sunshine and then cloudy again by late afternoon with highs in the mid 40's. Wind out of the WNW at 5 to 10 mph.

Friday night (Christmas Eve night): Cloudy with some showers likely after 11 PM. Lows mostly in the mid 30's. Wind out of the SE at 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday (Christmas): Scattered showers in the morning and then mostly cloudy in the afternoon with highs in the upper 40's. Wind generally out of the W to WNW at 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday: Partly cloudy with highs in the mid 40's. Wind out of the NW at 10 to 20 mph.
