The many tragic deaths in Buffalo from the extreme blizzard are truly heartbreaking. This wasn't just an ordinary blizzard as you can see by the great job that NWS Buffalo did in forecasting it before the storm. It was a combination of the extreme snow amounts over 4 feet, wind gusts over 65 mph, frigid cold, and long duration (blizzard conditions for 37.25 straight hours) that contributed to so many deaths. I really think there needs to be another level of Blizzard Warning called an Extreme Blizzard Warning with the criteria perhaps being frequent wind gusts over 55 mph with visibilities of 1/8th mile or less from snow and/or blowing snow for a duration of at least 6 hours.
