- The dry season begins in the West in April, and 2021 has so far been drier than any other April in the U.S. Drought Monitor’s 21-year history. Over 87% of the West is experiencing moderate (D1) drought or worse, and 42% is experiencing extreme (D3) or exceptional drought (D4).
- April began with 20.7% of the West in exceptional drought (D4), and the percentage now stands at about 21.1%. Prior to this year, the largest percentage of D4 in the West recorded in April during the U.S. Drought Monitor’s 21-year history was 7.6%, recorded in 2015.
