A brief look at the tropics and the Long Island forecast as nice weather begins Saturday:

- There continues to be a chance of some tropical development in the southwestern Caribbean towards mid-month, but nothing to worry about right now.

- After some showers and possibly a thunderstorm tomorrow and Friday, a nice stretch of warmer and dry weather begins on Saturday and lasts most of next week.


LONG ISLAND FORECAST:

Today: Mostly cloudy with filtered sunshine through mid to upper-level clouds with highs in the low to mid 70's, but cooler for the south shore and east end, especially by mid to late afternoon. Wind out of the SW at 5 mph in the morning and out of the S at 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Cloudy with a chance of some showers after midnight. Lows in the mid to upper 50's. Wind out of the S at around 10 mph.

Tomorrow: Showers at times, especially in the morning and then becoming more scattered with possibly an afternoon or evening thunderstorm. Humid and breezy with moderate to heavy downpours possible at times. Highs around 70 degrees. Wind out of the S at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

Tomorrow night: An evening thunderstorm possible with scattered showers at times overnight with moderate to heavy downpours possible. Lows around 60 degrees. Wind out of the SSW at 10 to 15 mph.

Friday: Humid with early morning showers and possibly a thunderstorm and then remaining mostly cloudy with some breaks of sun and a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon or early evening. Highs in the mid to upper 70's. Wind mostly out of the SW at 10 to 15 mph

Saturday: Mostly sunny with highs in the low 80's, but cooler for the south shore and east end. Wind out of the WSW at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and out of the SSW at 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday: Mostly sunny with highs mostly in the low to mid 80's, but cooler for the south shore and east end. Wind out of the SW at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

Monday: Sunny with highs mostly in the mid 80's, but some upper 80's for northern Nassau, and it will be cooler for the south shore and east end.

Tuesday: Sunny with highs in the mid to upper 80's, but cooler for the south shore and east end.
